Please enjoy a stroll through these exhibitions.

At the Nasher, the Ogden, and the Cameron museums it was a huge honor and delight to be able to bring together so many of my very large pots in one place.

Thanks also to Umstead collection, where we can visit them whenever we wish.

There is another exhibition from 1995, that was curated by Charles Millard and shown at what is now called The Gregg Museum of Art and Design at NCSU in Raleigh. We will get images of that event of soon.

Nasher Gallery

Nasher Museum of Art, Durham, NC
Spring and Summer 2010

The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University invited internationally renowned Pittsboro-based potter, Mark Hewitt, to create an installation of 12 of his large ceramic pots on the museum’s front lawn and roof. MARK HEWITT: FALLING INTO PLACE was on view for several months in the spring and summer of 2010. For this installation works were chosen from Mark’s own collection, four private collections, and the Cameron Art Museum’s collection in Wilmington, NC. The exhibition catalog features two excellent essays. The first is by Tanya Harrod, entitled “The Artist as a Young Man.” Herrod is the author of The Last Sane Man MICHAEL CARDEW – Modern Pots, Colonialism and the Counterculture, a newly published biography of Mark’s mentor, Michael Cardew. The second essay is by Henry Glassie, entitled “Mark in Place.” Glassie, a distinguished folklore scholar, has written 14 books and won many awards for his lifetime of humanistic scholarship.

See a video of this exhibition on our Publications page.

Ogden Gallery

The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans, LA
January 13, 2011 – April 10, 2011

This extraordinary exhibition featured 16 massive Hewitt pots, from permanent and private collections around the South. A stunning catalog included images of each pot, an essay by Christoper Benfey, entitled “Mark Hewitt at the Crossroads,” and another by Mark himself, entitled “A Few of My Favorite Things About North Carolina Pottery.”
