Keynote Speaker at Spode Society’s 40th Anniversary, Stoke-on-Trent, England

Mark Hewitt – A Potter’s Journey

On Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the Spode Society’s 40th Anniversary Seminar, Mark will present the story of his upbringing in a ‘Spode family’ and his trajectory that took him from pottery apprentice in England to Master Potter in Pittsboro, NC. This annual event will be held at the Spode Museum in Stoke on Trent, England.

The Spode Society was founded in 1986 to bring together collectors, museums and all lovers of Spode, Copeland and Garrett, Copeland, and more recent Spode wares; to promote, share and study the history and products of the Spode factory, its workforce and the Spode and Copeland families.

Studio Potter, Mark Hewitt, now residing and operating a pottery in Pittsboro, North Carolina, USA, was born in Stone, near Stoke on Trent and is the son of the late Gordon Hewitt CBE, a former director of Spode, and grandson of Ted Hewitt, former Managing Director (CEO) of Spode. He apprenticed with Michael Cardew and later Todd Piker in Connecticut. In 1983 he set up is own pottery in Pittsboro with his wife, Carol. Mark has received numerous prestigious awards and is a former president of the board of directors at the North Carolina Pottery Center in Seagrove, NC. Learn more about the event here.

The Spode Society Annual General Meeting and Seminar in June, is usually held at the Spode Museum in Stoke on Trent.  Visits to Private and Public Collections of ceramic related interest are also arranged throughout the year.
