Rectangular Platter

Mark Hewitt Pottery

SKU: 102-49

Rectangular slab platter. A carved wooden tool called a roulette was pressed into leather-hard clay around the edge of this platter leaving a lovely pattern. Small balls called 'wads' of clay were placed on the platter to keep it from fusing with another platter balanced on top of it during the firing. Removing the wads revealed pale clay not exposed to the salt flying through the kiln at high temperature that created the brown and/or gray salt glaze surface. Cheese tray.  Salmon platter. Fruit plate. So many options.
